Remember when the Devils were 7-10-2? It seems like so long ago, but it was only 7 games games ago. However, the Devils have won all of those games. They are now 14-10-2, with Boston coming to Newark on Wednesday. This is not a game they can look past. We all know the Bruins are not the best of the best, but certainly have the talent to win games.
Marc Savard has established himself as one of the best passing centers in the league, Phil Kessel is one of the top young players in the league and Zdeno Chara is a massive force on defense. The Devils need to keep doing exactly what they have been doing. To continue their success, they must keep buying into coach Brent Sutter’s system. That means hard forechecking, physical play and continuing the rely on their defense and goaltender Martin Broduer to play on high levels.
It also does not hurt to get players back from injuries. The returning Jamie Langenbrunner has 11 points in the 9 games he has played since his return (earning an immediate waiver claim on my fantasy team). Langenbrunner is all but the captain of this team and should one day wear the ‘C’. Colin White, who missed 21 games due to a serious eye injury, has been a force on defense and it is no coincidence that the team is 6-0 since he has returned. The 29-year-old (will be 30 on December 12th) veteran defensemen has been a fixture on the blueline since 1999 and has won two Stanley Cups with New Jersey.
After dealing with the Bruins, Washington heads to town for another Eastern Conference Battle. Despite being one of the worst teams in the NHL, they still have some guy named Ovechkin. Alex Ovechkin, already a 52 and 46 goal scorer, has 20 goals in 27 games this season and is a man among boys on the ice at times. What that means, is again, this is a game they cannot look past.
So make sure to listen to the Thursday edition of “Devilscast,” for a complete breakdown of the battle with the Bruins at the “Rock,” with Greg Tartaglia and myself and be sure to chime in with your emails at hosts@devilscast.com. We will also preview the matchup with the Capitals on Friday and the weekend battle with division rival, the first place New York Rangers. Till then, go top shelf.
